Sweetpea’s Comeback

Sweetpea’s Comeback

In a previous blog post we told our organizational history and how we got to this point. In today’s post, we’re going to describe how we’re going to complete our return to operation.

Our Plans for the Future

Sweetpea Friends of Rutland Animals is moving forward with a clear, phased strategy to expand our life-saving work. Each step depends on raising the funds to make it happen, and we’re deeply grateful to everyone whose support has brought us this far. Together, we’re building a brighter future for animals in need—here’s how we’ll do it.

Step 1: Launch a Small Shelter in the Adoption Center

We’re transforming the old boarding kennel space in our Adoption Center into a small scale animal shelter. This renovated area will meet all the regulatory and animal care requirements for a shelter but house only a small number of animals.

This project is on the fast track. To open soon, we’re finalizing compliance with shelter requirements, preparing to secure licenses and permits, refining our standard operating procedures, and strengthening key business partnerships. Once open, this small shelter will showcase our value to the community, unlock new funding opportunities, and pave the way for broader impact.

Step 2: Expand Partnerships and Revenue Streams

Opening the interim shelter opens us up to new possibilities. Many grants and funding sources are reserved for operational shelters caring for animals, so as soon as we’re up and running, we’ll pursue these aggressively. These resources will fuel construction of our larger shelter and amplify our ability to save more lives.

Step 3: Build the New Shelter

With funding in hand, we’ll tackle the remaining shelter projects head-on. Our timeline starts with completing the interior lighting and electrical work by mid-2025. Next, we’ll prioritize installing a new septic system, followed by the propane and generator hookups, sealing the floor, and finally outfitting the kennels, restroom, bathing sinks, and other interior fixtures. Each milestone brings us closer to a fully operational facility ready to serve animals and our community.

Reopening: Building on Success

The success of our Adoption Center interim shelter will set the stage for reopening the new, larger shelter. By then, our operating procedures will be ironclad, our financial model will be robust, and our relationships with veterinarians, Animal Control, community partners, and volunteers will be stronger than ever. We’ll apply for permits and launch in phases, steadily increasing capacity until we’re fully operational—ready to rescue and rehome animals on a greater scale.
