Sweetpea has signed up for the Harness Fundraiser Program from Walk Your Dog With Love. Follow the links to see the innovative harness design, that helps you to have your dog walk to heel -- gently. If you wish to purchase a dog harness, Sweetpea gets 100% of the retail markup for our shelter fund!
The Nov 2009 newsletter is available at the link. We staff an information table at the Auburn PetCo on weekends. This gives us publicity and makes the public aware of who we are and what we do, as well as raising much-needed donations and allowing us to adopt out dogs and cats. Volunteers are needed to staff the table from 11.00 - 2. 00 on Saturdays or Sundays. Please contact Dick Clark (contact details below) if you have the time to help out.
We would like to thank everyone who donated to Sweetpea at Christmas time. All of your contributions are very welcome: we are striving to reach our shelter goal, but our shelter fund increased in the last year, as you can see from our graphic (to the right)!.
We are still seeking land on which to build a much-needed shelter. We had options on land donations which were denied for use by a DCR ruling, so now we are looking for other options. If anyone in Rutland has 2 - 3 acres that they are willing to donate, or to sell for a small fee, please contact us. Any
land donation is tax deductable. We have approximately $100,000 to start building and can apply for a loan to cover the rest. We
would also be grateful for any local contractors who could donate their services - we would be happy to give you publicity in return!
Happy Tails
We recently heard more news about two of our adopted dogs, Mr Emmit and Beauregard, and four of our adopted kitties, Tito, Theo and Moses, and Sassy. See their pages for some wonderful photos!
Warning - Beware of Cocoa Mulch and other Chocolate Products
Cocoa Mulch, which is a by-product of chocolate manufacture can contain a lethal ingredient called Theobromine. This is toxic for dogs and may also harm cats. It smells like chocolate, which attracts dogs, especially puppies, to eat it. There are two known canine deaths attributed to this product. Recently, some manufacturers have processed the cocoa bean shells used in this mulch to remove Theobromine. But unprocessed cocoa mulch carries no warning on the lable. In its "raw" form, cocoa mulch is very dangerous because the toxins are so concentrated and because the chocolate smell is so attractive to dogs. A 50 lb. dog would only have to eat about 4.5oz of unprocessed coca mulch to experience increased heart rate, 5.8 oz. to experience seizures, and 9oz. would cause death (source: Snopes.com). Smaller dogs would have to eat much less for the product to be toxic - a few tablespoonfuls.
In contrast, a 50 lb. dog could eat 7.5 oz. of milk chocolate without an upset tummy and up to a pound of milk chocolate bfeore it experience increased heart rate (which can be fatal in older dogs). 50 oz of mlik chocolate, 15oz of semisweet (dark) chocolate, or 5 oz. of baking chocolate can cause death in a 50 lb. dog. The dose for small dogs is much less, proportionate to their body weight. Keep all chocolate products out of the reach of dogs and consider avoiding the use of cocoa mulch in your garden.
